At the battle of
Elandslaagte, October 21, 1899, where the " Charge " of that
name was so gallantly carried out, a forward movement was met by
a terrific fire at almost point-blank range, and for a moment
the advance was in danger of being checked. Captains Mullins and
R. Johnston most bravely rushed forward, rallying the men,
the former officer being wounded during this devoted action. By
their heroic act, at a most critical moment, the intended
flanking movement was unimpeded, allowing this operation, which
decided the issue of the battle, to be successfully carried out.
