Sergeant Arthur Herbert Lindsey Richardson

Lord Strathcona's Corps

5th July 1900

Sergeant Arthur Herbert Lindsey Richardson VC

On July 5, 1900, at the action of Wolve Spruit, about fifteen miles north of Standerton, a small party of Lord Strathcona's Corps, about thirty-eight in number, came to close quarters with about eighty of the enemy. The Colonials came under a very fierce fire, and, on the order to retire being given, Richardson rode back and took up a man who had been hit in two places, and who was dismounted, his horse having been shot, and carried him out of range of the Boers. A heavy fire was brought to bear on him at the time, the enemy being only 300 yards distant, and the horse he rode was wounded and could only proceed slowly.
