On July 5, 1900, at the action of Wolve Spruit, about
fifteen miles north of Standerton, a small party of Lord
Strathcona's Corps, about thirty-eight in number, came to close
quarters with about eighty of the enemy. The Colonials came
under a very fierce fire, and, on the order to retire being
given, Richardson rode back and took up a man who had been hit
in two places, and who was dismounted, his horse having been
shot, and carried him out of range of the Boers. A heavy fire
was brought to bear on him at the time, the enemy being only 300
yards distant, and the horse he rode was wounded and could only
proceed slowly. |
