Welcome to North East Medals, we
are based in the English border county of Northumberland. We specialise in the
war medals issued to the sailors, soldiers and airmen of the British and
Commonwealth forces. The majority of the British war medals listed on this
site were issued for the wars and campaigns of the 19th and 20th
century.

New and Improved Medal Index Card

As you may know the Ancestry website has digitized the WW1 medal
index cards and these are now available on their website, although (last
time we checked) the database was not 100% uploaded - although it
soon will be - and there are a lot of cards online now.
So what's the big deal?? the National Archives have had these
online for years? - Well, the big difference is that the Ancestry site
has a photo quality scan of the card, front and back. I
had heard over the years that the odd card had information
written on the back - well this is definitely the case- after checking a
few cards we have found addresses, correspondence from next of kin and
various notes. The fact that the scans of the cards are colour photo
quality also reveals different coloured inks showing information written
at different times. The quality of the National Archives downloads was
always a problem, this is now resolved with the superior Ancestry
database. All this is available for unlimited access for an annual
subscription of about £70, and when the national archives charges £3.50
for a single (and poor quality) card download this is value for money.
Considering that this subscription includes all the pension and service
records for WW1 plus all the census and numerous other genealogy
indexes, It's now basically an essential research tool. Link to their

These pages list the campaigns commemorated with a
campaign medal or clasp that a particular British regiment served in, with
the numbers of medals/clasps awarded where known. This section compliments
and integrates with
the British Medal Guide above. These pages should be considered as a guide only and always subject to addition & amendment. Included are the
mainstream campaign medals for each regiment. It is important to note that "odd
men" and in particular officers can be found to be eligible for campaign
medals/clasps their battalion as a whole were
not generally entitled to.

We set this forum up before the summer, but turned it off due to lack of
available time to develop and integrate it properly. Anyway we have resuscitated
it "as is" and will develop it as time permits instead. Basically it's fully
functional but needs expanded to include the missing regiments. Due to the
eventual size of this project it will require several index pages, but we will
add navigation links here and on the forum to each page. The idea was to link to each
sub-forum (ie each regiment) from its "Medals of the Regiments" page above, and
any collector, genealogist or historian would bookmark their regiment of
interest and that would be their entry point to the forum. For instance if you
were only interested in discussing the Grenadier Guards then you would bookmark
either the relevant
Medals of the Regiments page or the forum page itself.
Anyway, there is a section in there to list missing medals, we would strongly
recommend including the recipient's service number and surname is in the thread title for the sake of better search engine indexing, which will increase
your chances of success. |

WW1 Research just got much
cheaper... |
Once upon a time........it was a very expensive and more often
than not disappointing business paying a researcher to find WW1 service
papers at the National Archives.
Last time I tried I asked the researcher to find and copy any
service/pension records that may exist for six WW1 infantry
soldiers. The charge was £10 each (whether papers existed or not )
and 40p per page photocopies. One soldier had documentation that
survived - 11 pages copied at a cost of £4.40 . Final research bill
£64.40 plus postage.
Big changes are afoot with the digitisation of these records and their
availability online via ancestry.co.uk (look for the British Army WWI
Pensions link on the Search Military Records
page) - at a very reasonable
£79.95 for a years unlimited access to these, and millions of other
records. Births/marriages/deaths, census, other military records, you
name it -it seems to be getting digitised and added to their database -
even phone books. Plus of course there is the spin-off of being able to
get started on you own family tree.
If you are a serious collector or researcher deciding whether to take a
subscription or not then this really is a 'no brainer' and will become
basically an essential tool for your hobby. You can, for instance,
check all those trios and pairs etc. before you buy for an
interesting story. In fact you could quickly recover the
subscription cost by the value added effect of this instant
research. |

These surviving burnt and unburnt series of documents (as
they are known) for WW1 Army NCOs and other ranks have all now been digitised
you can frequently expect to
find: Attestation forms, Medical history forms, Casualty forms,
Disability statements, Regimental conduct sheets, Awards. These records
will generally reveal: Age, Birthplace, Occupation, Marital status, Date of
attestation, Physical description. |
