The National Defence Medal
Medaille de la Defense Nationale

Instituted 21st April 1982, and awarded to the Military for "operational service" and interventions for the benefit of civil populations. Also available to civilians and foreigners for service beneficial to the defence of France. Eligibility is assessed via a combined time served / points system. medals are in three classes , bronze, silver (plate) and gold (gilt).
The medal: 36mm diameter, the obverse shows the dramatic figure of La Marseillaise and the inscription  Republique Francaise. reverse show the Phrygian cap and the inscription  ARMEE NATION DEFENCE NATIONALE
