The Medal for the Military
Fighter of the war 1940 - 45
De Medaille van de Militaire Strijder van de Oorlog 1940-1945
Instituted in December 1967
for award to enlisted active service military personnel for WW2 -
after the need to create their own distinctive decoration was
recognised. (Most of the other Belgian medals for WW2 could be
awarded to civilians and resistance fighters as well as the
military) The medal could be conferred on Belgians or foreigners
that served with the exiled military forces in England.
Description: A bronze 37mm wide Greek cross with a raised
rim, the junction of the arms in filled with the sector of a circle.
Obverse depicts an upward pointing roman sword on the vertical arms,
with the dates 1940 - 1945 on the horizontal arms. Reverse depicts
the Belgian lion, rampant.
There are a few slightly different versions of
this medal corresponding to the different manufacturers.
Ribbon: a wide central yellow stripe, flanked by the Belgian
tricolour, with green outer edges.
