The Medal of the National Committee for Assistance and Food Supply.
Medaille du Comite National de Secours et d'Alimentation.
(1914-1918)

Instituted 31st May 1919 to commemorate service with the 'National Committee' - these individuals worked during the war to provide food and assistance to the Belgian population. The medal became affectionately known as the "haricot bean medal" due to the large quantities of this type of bean that the National Committee workers distributed.
The Belgian Monitor ( Belgian equivalent of the London Gazette)  published a list of recipients of the medal on the 21st August 1920 in an appendix that ran to a sizable 230 pages.
The medal was created in four classes; 1st class, gilt finish with a rosette on the ribbon; 2nd class, gilt finish (no rosette); 3rd class, silver finish; 4th class, in bronze.

Description; 34mm diameter, in bronze, plated as appropriate for the first three classes, with a ball and ring type suspension. Obverse; a crowned female bust representing "la Belgique" within an oak wreath. Reverse; centrally the monogram of the National Committee 'CN' with the dates 1914 - 1918 to the left and right, above and below are representations of a cereal crop plant.  Around the perimeter is the bilingual inscription EN SOUVENIR DE SA COLLABORATION . TER HERINNERING AAN ZYN MEDEWERKING. (In remembrance of his/her collaboration)
