Medal of the Defaulter 1940

Medaille du Refractaire 1940 - 1945
Instituted 12th February 1951 to
reward those that defaulted on military or labour obligations
imposed upon them by the enemy ("or his agents"). The medal has
three categories denoted by the ribbon type (see below)
Description: 37mm diameter of patinated bronze with a ring
suspension. Obverse depicts the waist up image of a man, arms
crossed in a defiant attitude. Reverse, the inscription 1940-1945
FORSAN VICTI NUNQUAM SERVI (Vanquished Perhaps, Never Enslaved)

Green with two yellow stripes
Belgian nationals, who, as of the 10th May 1940, voluntarily
refused military obligations imposed upon them by the enemy. |

Green with two white stripes
Belgian nationals who voluntarily refused obligations to
work imposed upon them by the enemy or his agents. |

Green with two red stripes

Deportees to Germany for forced labour who returned
to Belgium on leave and then evaded return to Germany (prior
to 6th June 1944). |
