Medaille du Volontaire Combattant 1914 - 1918

     Instituted 17th June 1930 for award to Belgians and some foreigners  who voluntarily enlisted for service during the Great War.  Initially for six months service but further decrees reduce the time qualification for the older volunteers.
     Description ; in bronze, circular with a crescent section added to the top producing a pear shaped medal. Obverse; the head of two volunteers, one from the 1830 revolution and the other a 1914-1918 soldier. Above is the royal crown and laurel leaves.  Reverse: the inscription VOLUNTARIIS 1914-1918 PATRIA MEMOR ( a version is also found with the spelling "VOLONTARIIS")
Ribbon: Dark blue.
