The Egypt Medal 1882 - 1889

Instituted  October 1882 for the Egyptian campaign of the same year. Extended to include the later Egyptian campaigns, up to 1889.
Description:  36mm diameter, in silver with a swivelling suspender. Obverse; the veiled head of Queen Victoria and the Legend "VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX". Reverse; a Sphinx on a decorated pedestal with the word "EGYPT" over. Medals awarded for the first campaign have the date 1882 under the Sphinx, medals for the later campaigns are undated.  13 bars were issued, see below for list.
The medal could be awarded without a bar in both dated and undated forms. Recipients of the dated medal for the first campaign , who also served in a later campaign could return their medal for the addition of any further bars entitled. As the first campaign medal with bar(s) (Alexandria 11th July and Tel-El-Kebir) were issued without lugs for a second or third attachment, any medals returned  had the whole set replaced, hence genuine multiple bar medals always have uniform rivets.
Naming: generally engraved in distinctive sloping serif capitals - with the usual slight style variations detectable on close inspection. Undated medals to the navy and marines are found impressed in large serif capitals. Also found in engraved running script or impressed small serif capitals to Indian units. Medals to local Egyptian forces are engraved in Arabic.
Ribbon: Three blue and two white stripes
.
The Egypt Medal and the Khedive's Star:  All Recipients of the Egypt medal qualified for one of the four types of Khedive's Star. See table below for what star goes with what medal. Always bear in mind the recipient's relevant star is that for his first period of service.
