* D-Day Initial Assault 6/6/44; A & B Squadrons in 'swimming' duplex drive tanks to land Sword Beach, Queen sector - followed by C squadron & RHQ in Landing Craft [Tank] (that was the plan - in practice the LCTs passed through the initial squadrons who were having various difficulties with the DD tanks mainly due to the choppy sea. About 34 of the initial 40 made it into the water, 31 reached the beach but a number of these were swamped by breakers in the process, although remarkably many of the crews continued to operate the guns of their disabled tanks in a rising tide with the turrets flooded, the crews coming ashore later in rubber dinghies.
